Big Jesus, Big Business...Big Deal?

A few days ago I suggested that security and social justice at home, democratization and military might abroad, and Christian faith everywhere make for a potent package deal to a significant number of likely GOP voters. Then I came across this NYT piece on megachurches that have added the local economy to their business models. Good? Bad? Ugly? Probably better than the alternative. But is the Buddy Jesus version of Christianity that seems to be driving the evangelical approach to ‘common good’ questions too beholden to the state and the market? Or is this the wave of the future, with Christianity continuing to weaken in terms of creed and dogma and social togetherness continuing to strengthen?
