Decked Out
The first trailer for the Sex and the City movie is online, and it tells us absolutely nothing about what the movie will be about, but a whole lot about, but a whole lot about what the characters will wear. Maybe I shouldn’t be all that surprised, but I find it slightly incredible how casually and blatantly the trailer dismisses with any pretense that the film is about narrative or character. Nope, it’s pure fashion show, like an issue of Vogue on 35mm.
I think you mistook this TEASER trailer for an actual trailer. Teaser trailers, as their names indicate, are rarely about storytelling or characters, since they’re too short. All they can do is provide tiny flashes of ideas that will whet the viewer’s appetite — and yes, it turns out fashion appeals to women. Go figure.

No, I’m well aware of the teaser trailer phenomenon, and I agree with you to a point. But look at, say, the teaser for the upcoming Batman sequel, which actually has no footage from the film, and only a few minor snippets of dialog. But it nonetheless does an effective job of previewing the film’s main selling point (and conflict): the rise of the Joker. The SITC teaser is similarly effective in getting the film’s essence, but what it does is tell us that it isn’t about the characters, or the story, or any of that useless cinematic/narrative drapery: It’s purely about the fashion, no apologies.
