God help this campaign. Nice Hugabee attacks Bush’s “arrogant bunker mentality” foreign policy, when all along the real problem’s been just the opposite in every way — an all-too-egalitarian and activist democratic evangelism. So of course Mitt Romney — heretofore the candidate offering a greater departure from Bush’s foreign policy than any Republican save Ron Paul — lets slip the spokesmen of war:
“Mike Huckabee is known for his witty one-liners, but his criticism of the Bush Administration with sound bites right from the Democrats’ talking points is no laughing matter. At a time when Republican voters want strength of purpose and resolve in foreign policy, Mike Huckabee has resorted to the Democrat playbook of just bashing the president.”
Doomed! Are we living in upside-down land? Is every day opposite day? At AmSpecBlog, Jennifer Rubin duly notes that it all
gets a little dicey as Romney sounds his own criticisms of the war but either Romney, or if he is not to survive, one of his rivals will have to convince voters that Huckabee lacks a conservative foreign policy outlook and sound judgment. McCain, Thompson and Rudy may have an easier time making the argument given their background and longstanding views.
Yes, John “Occupy Kosovo” McCain is simply renowned for his conservative foreign policy credentials. Ditto “NATO in Jerusalem” Giuliani. My Christmas miracle: Paul, Romney, and Thompson form an earthly trinity, three-in-one. If it’s patently impossible, is it still blasphemy?

You guys don’t get it, let me explain it to you.
Republicans are the POPULIST party, particularly in terms of primary voting. Huckaboo made a big-boo-boo. He went elitist instead of populist.
The populist position is: expand Gitmo, put terrorists in there forever, and smack down (no nation building) any troublesome foreign part. Such as Iran, an Osama-led Pakistan (or influenced), etc.
Elitism concerns itself with what the UN, EU, World Court, or Brian Williams thinks. Which is unimportant to Rep primary voters. For Huck to survive his gaffe-a-minute spate he’ll have to get his Evangelical base in Iowa all stirred up on the basis of Evangelical faith alone. It’s possible I suppose. But unlikely in NH or even SC (where pro-military populism is much stronger than evangelicalism).
