Minghella's Game

Let me second Ross’s praise for The Talented Mr. Ripley, one of the most unsettling thrillers of the last few decades. As Ross says, there’s lots to love about the film, but one element that’s consistently overlooked is the captivating jazz soundtrack, the burgeoning chaos of which mirrors Ripley’s transformation from oppressed striver to cultured monster. The film charts Ripley’s transformation, and it seems at times as if he’s learning from, or perhaps succumbing to, the madness and violence in the rhythms of jazz.
