“If Holden Caulfield was the sensitive loner from the age of nerd oppression, then Harry Potter was the magical leader in the age of geek empowerment.” Man, if I could write a line that silly, yet that smart, and that slick, I’d be rich. It’s a label! It’s a frame! It explains the world, sort of, and is kind of dorky yet hip at the same time! I could spin a book contract out of that sentence, and Brooks might already be doing so right now. (I can see it coming in early 2010: “PotterWorld: How Geeks Triumphed Over Nerds, and Changed America Forever.” It’ll get a big front-page review in the NYT Book Review.)
