Quiet Riot
I was fairly nonplussed by Ra Ra Riot’s first EP, but, as I reported in a post eaten by our archives, their live show is pretty fantastic. The good news is that they now have a full length record out that does a rather good job of showing off their sound.
On a related note, The Faint’s new record, Fasciination (streaming live in its entirety!), is somewhat underwhelming — a tired blend of sex-synths and obvious dance floor sneers — but they put on one of the best shows in indie rock, so I’m still pretty stoked about seeing them this weekend, and I highly recommend their live gig to anyone who gets the opportunity.
You might want to mention that the version of the song in that video is from the EP that left you “nonplussed.” I liked the EP pretty well, but I’m excited that the songs will get a new treatment and new companion tracks in the LP. Besides the swell string section, one of the refreshing things about RRR is hearing a young, alternative-y band whose vocalist can seriously sing.

When people put quotes around “nonplussed,” I think it means non-nonplussed. Plussed, if you will.

But when Chris Floyd put quotes around nonplussed, I think it meant he was quoting Peter Suderman, who opened this can of worms with his arguably quizzical — nonplussing, if you will — use of nonplussed, insofar as he may think it’s a synonym for not impressed.

Not impressed: Well, it’s true that I wasn’t impressed with the EP. But, no, I meant that I was also sort of confused by it — it was kind of a muddled, lumpy mess — rather oddly under-produced for such a smart-sounding band.
