Guilty Pleasures
For whatever reason, I continue to like Keanu Reeves, despite knowing full well how terrible an actor he is. That’s not to say I always like his movies — The Day the Earth Stood Still is a serious mess — but I like Keanu, even at his worst, and even when the movie around him is wretched. Sometimes, you don’t get to pick the actors you like — you just find that you do, and there’s no escaping it.
I don’t think Keanu is terrible, at all. He’s great in The Matrix, My Own Private Idaho, I Love You to Death, The Gift, and Bill & Ted (all examples of “playing different characters”). And his action-hero persona is a perfect fit in Point Break and Speed.
Here’s a post from my blog on the subject:

People who have met him at parties say in person he’s very boyish, reminding them of a colt.
The problem is that we have an abundance of preternaturally still-youthful leading men, and he can’t compete with DiCaprio who is both boyish and a great movie actor. But give him the right role and he remains interesting to watch.
