Snark Contrast
It’s been in print for several weeks now, but my review of David Denby’s Snark is now online. Despite being pitched as a book about rhetoric and language, it is, as Michael Moynihan also pointed out recently, a surprisingly political book — and not in a good way.
One could offer many demonstrations of the myopia of Denby’s point of view. I’ll be as kind as I can be by leaving aside Denby’s view of Keith Olbermann as a ray of light in a darkened world, and instead point out only how wrong is Denby’s view that “college graduates” in general have embraced Barack Obama, that purported avatar of a post-snark age. In reality, only half of college graduates who voted embraced Obama in any way at all. Of the other half, 48% embraced John McCain and the remaining 2% had the good sense to embrace someone other than Obama or McCain.
