What a Day!
I skipped out on 24 this season, though I’m tempted to go back and watch (in a triumph of turnaround, the box set DVD hits stores tomorrow!), mostly for the D.C. setting. But I did find Fox’s summary of tonight’s season finale somewhat hilarious and charming:
After 22 hellacious hours underscored by the loss of innocent lives, the evil betrayal of Tony Almeida, the First Gentleman’s kidnapping and shooting, a vicious siege on the White House, heroic sacrifices, a conspiracy, exposure to a lethal pathogen and an unthinkable bio-weapon attack, Jack Bauer reaches an emotional breaking point.
That’s all it took? Well, about time!
And then there’s this from John Miller over on The Corner:
24 [John J. Miller]
The show should start calling itself 16, so it can quit before the season goes sour, as it always seems to do. Things we’ve learned in the last few weeks: The real terrorists aren’t foreign haters of America but U.S. defense contractors, stem cells offer the hope of miracle cures for biological-weapon attacks, and when Jack Bauer seeks deathbed counsel he calls a Muslim imam.

Oh, good! I was concerned that Jack Bauer might be a robot. Having a nervous breakdown is refreshingly human.

Hmm, so stem cells curing things, and the possibility that a muslim imam might offer spiritual comfort are RIDICULOUS and ‘sour’, but bauer using torture and consistently getting reliable information, and multiple ticking time bomb scenarios are just peachy. crikey, the corner’s my new onion.

I actually liked this season much more than some of the previous ones. I recommend it. It’s basically given up the ghost of trying to make some point or other—although it tries weakly (and weekly too)—and just basically does crazy s#@& that’s entertaining to watch. It was so over the top this season that you just have to love it.
