Dayo!
We spent 61 minutes chatting. She’s fantastic. As for me, I need to stop saying, “y’know.”
I’m profoundly grateful to Dayo for introducing me to Das Racist.

On the odd occasion that I’ve done a podcast, I’ve constantly said “,right,” after every statement I’m making. Drives me crazy to listen to.

We always cringe more than anyone else at our own proclivities around these sorts of things. I’ve always thought you sounded very well spoken and intelligent when I’ve podcasted avec you, Freddie. It’s a tough medium to get comfortable with coming from blogging as yr primary mode of expression. Very immediate, lightening quick, easy to f-up. I think it actually presents a useful test of someone’s rhetorical and analytic skills and just how much thought they put into their ideas based on how dexterous they are in working with those ideas live.
Blasphemous as this may come off, you get a much better appreciation for what folks like Limbaugh do every day.

well, you still have the best delivery of any bangladeshi-american diavlogger on bloggingheads ;-) in any case, i am intrigued by dayo’s assertion that minorities are the integrators because they interact with the majority by definition. this is my personal experience, i went to a high school of 1,000 which had about 15 non-whites, with non-white liberally interpreted. but is this really the experience of most non-whites with social segregation kept in mind? ta-nehisi coates has talked about how he spent much of his life in a black world. in contrast, i have plenty of white friends who went to high school in the bay area where whites were a minority, and when they go to a white majority college they feel kind of weird.
the point is perhaps this is like welfare. a disproportionate number of minorities might be integrators, but most integrators may still be white, because of the large number of whites.
…some possible quantitative analysis to come….

ok, post on my weblog will show this morning. though a larger proportion of people who have cosmopolitan social circles are minorities than white, it seems that the largest proportion in these cosmopolitan social circles remain white (a small proportion of a large number can be greater than a large proportion of a small number).
