that’s nice. I’ll read Reihan Salam wherever he writes. Hope he still does bloggingheads, too. It looks like NRO did the equivalent of hiring Beckham to save them from being relegated to the 2nd division.
To see an intelligent, civil, conversation with a leftwinger – that between him and Christopher Hayes – will hopefully serve as a model of emulation not only at NRO but at other sites & ‘zines in the right-of-center universe.
Yeah it’s hard to know what to think. It’s one thing to encourage a diversity of views and vibrant debate but NR and especially NRO has some real freakshows, and even the supposedly more level-headed writers don’t shy away from doing the nutjob thing every once in a while (Lowry editorials, and Jonah “very seriously” believes liberals follow in a fascist tradition).
Dude’s got to pay the bills though. I wonder if Reihan will self-censor on social views that would undoubtedly cause half of the Corner to have aneurysms? I wonder if he would have dared criticize the W administration had he been at NR then, when as one of the NR writers admitted, there was a certain internal pressure to hold ranks?
My prediction is that once the Republican party folds, one of the tidbits people will mention is the intellectual rot at places like NR. I’m not sure Reihan can do much about it, and I predict a Frum-like experience complete with departure. But I wish him the best.
hahaha, you are not the darkside Dr. Riddick.
You are the mom-flag-apple-pie side.
No…we shall watch Reihan writhe and blacken in the auto da fe that K-Lo and Rich Starbursts are surely preparing for his first Palin crit.
“Suddenly there was a cry of “Hiya! Hiya!” (“She! She!”), and thereupon the entire crowd of spectators instantly precipitated itself upon the ground, and lay still as though it were individually and collectively stricken dead…”
“Suddenly there was a cry of “Hiya! Hiya!” (“She! She!”), and thereupon the entire crowd of spectators instantly precipitated itself upon the ground, and lay still as though it were individually and collectively stricken [brain]dead…”
If the GOP dies, Reihan and Ross helped kill it, by their complicity in summoning Palin, who is merely a host for the the ancient immortal demon of Kylonism.
cw: Not Star Wars. It’s like Charlie Sheen in Wall Street. He gets a 5-minute interview with the NRO because of a box of cigars and a hot tip (“I’d go long Sam’s Club Republicans. They FAA is going to find them not at fault in an airline crash. I know a guy inside.”) Next thing he knows he’s following Moderate Republicans around on a motorcycle reverse guessing their policy and beating them to the punch and getting James Spader to leak hot tips to the public without his fingerprints on it.
It ends with Jim Manzi and crew slicing and dicing the very same Sam’s Club Reihan brought there in the first place. And him getting punched by the senior editors in Central Park while wearing a wire.
I never saw Wall Street. Maybe he’s more like Martin Sheen in Apocolyps Now. Imagine now, if you will, Reihan’s final encounter with the mad Victor Davis Hanson. Reihan encounters Hanson in the bowels of a pagan temple. Hanson’s bald head gleams with sweat and he eats nuts as he speaks.
VDH: It is impossible for words to describe what is necessary to those who do not know what horror means. Horror has a face. And you must make a friend of horror. Horror andmoral terror are your frinds. If they are not then they are enemies to be feared.
RS: Ummmm…. have you seen my Elvis Costello impersonation?
Matako wonders if Reihan’s new gig is a spoof. I am wondering the same about the comments here. Steve C going from decrying the lack of intelligent discourse at the Corner to childish name-calling, in the breadth of two posts? That could only have been an intentional parody.
I believe that there is no intelligent discourse in the Corner and that it’s a toxic waste dump, at the same time, and in the most studied, earnest, serious way possible. At least as seriously as, say, Jonah Goldberg is that liberals follow in the fascist tradition.
