btw, i really thought re: summer vacation your point that historical accidents can become part of who we are. i am personally sympathetic to cc’s point, but the big-picture issue that sometimes different people can have different values for means and ends is something that needs to be emphasized. cc’s mode of analysis seems to view summer vacation as a means, while cf’s looking it more as an ends. cc’s utilitarian cost vs. benefit analysis is kind of pointless then.

I had an of-two-minds reaction to Pale Fire, which also relies heavily on end notes, that was pretty close to Clark’s to Infinite Jest. I’ve not read Infinite Jest and this may or may not be the case there, but with Pale Fire, although it was annoying to flip back and forth all the time, it would have been impossible to write that book without that structure. As such, it seemed like less a case of needless artistic pretension than really intricate and creative storytelling.
