Rise Of The Machines
I’m sorry, isn’t Matt Yglesias the one hyping the robot menace? So what on earth is he doing cheerleading for our drone fighter future, huh?
(Actually, I basically agree with him, but still, cognitive dissonance, hello?)

Because drones are still controlled by people, albeit remotely.
Sure, the next step will be to just let an AI program handle it, which will lead to our robot overlords, but we’re still safe with the drones.
Indeed, it might be the only way to fight the future robots is with an army of our own human controlled drones…

4th generation milspec was C4I….command, control, communications, computers.
5th gen is teleop and telepresence.
6th gen is strong AI.

Yeah, Noah, I’m surprised you’re not able to grasp the simple robot/cyborg/waldo phylogeny.

That would be…..robot/cyborg/waldo/silicon intelligence phylogeny.
lol.

There are many ASAT options that could disable remote control.
In a serious war, just filling important earth orbits with huge numbers of tiny projectiles could deny vast swathes of orbital space to enemy satellites. Then there’s high altitude nuclear explosions, lasers.
You can’t become too dependent on space-based systems against a high-tech enemy.

I follow Asimov’s intuition that an AI is just a robot with no arms or legs.
Daniel:
We have no high-tech enemies.

Chet,
“We have no high-tech enemies.”
Gary North tells a wonderful joke: (I have adapted it slightly)
The USA it is said, will use the Constellation program to return to the Moon sometime in the 2020s.
At least when they get there this time, they won’t have to take any food with them.
Q: Why won’t they have to take any food with them?
A: Because by the time they get there, they will be able to dine out at any number of fine Chinese restaurants.

At least I think it was Garry North. I hope I am remembering that correctly.

If the Chinese are wasting their time setting up moonbases by 2020 or even 2080, then they probably won’t have enough money to maintain a “high tech military” or much of anything else. The moon is a boring chunk of rock, and will remain so for a long time.
That said, I am 100% with Yglesias on the drone fighter thing.
