The 90's Are Back
Alice in Chains, Collective Soul, and Pearl Jam are all releasing new albums before the end of the year. The original members of Sunny Day Real Estate are getting back together for a tour (and yes, I have most definitely procured tickets to the D.C. show already). I feel like I’m 16 again, or maybe like I’m 55, and excited to go see the Rolling Stones when they hit town.
“Alice in Chains” is a cover band without Layne Staley. When he died, so did any last vestiges of 90s alt-rock pop culture.
No thanks, I’ll stick to opera, which I’ve gained an apprecation for in recent years. And the real Alice in Chains was nothing if not Wagnerian.

I remember going to the first SDRE reunion tour in like 1998. How has that band aged over the past decade? And honestly Peter, can you make it to the end of “The Rising Tide”?
That said, I’ll be there as well.

Listening to a bunch of SDRE right now, I’m reminded the lyrics:
And I dream
To heal your wounds
But I bleed myself
I bleed myself
Always won every impromptu “most emo lyrics” contest I’ve thrown.

Nah, it’s much more pathetic waiting around at 55 to get excited that Leonard Cohen eventually got enough energy to put out something new. I feel his pain.

Maybe it’s a compression of decades. Right now the ’80s are back, with Brooke Shields on TV and MJ selling at the top of the charts. The year opened with the ’70s returning, as RTF released a live album coming off a big tour….

I was always big into Pearl Jam, but after Vitology nothing was quite…the same? As good? As original? I’m not sure what it was, but something changed after that.

As you get older you notice the styles passing and mixing ebbing and flowing. And then you let go. It’s a zen thing.
ps. Who here like the Minute Men?

You also stop proofreading. You write, you press submit, you let it go

E.D. Klein,
I agree that Vitalogy was PJ’s high point, but I think No Code was an flawed, but interesting and ulttimately worthy experiment. Yield was a very solid rock album, if not particularly innovative or relevant. Their next two, Binaural and Riot Act, are mediocre efforts but their last one, the self-titled one, was another solid rock effort along the lines of Yield.

The other thing about Pearl Jam is they have become one the best live acts around, If you haven’t caught them on their web site you can listen to most of their concerts and buy self released “bootlegs” as well.
