Alien Nation
Is District 9 the best movie of the summer? Possibly, though it’s probably overrated, and The Hurt Locker, another brilliant but imperfect low-budget action film, certainly gives it a run for its money. If you’re still undecided about seeing Blomkamp’s brutal little sci-fi allegory, you could do worse than to spend a few minutes watching “Alive in Joburg,” the early short on which District 9 was based.
A spam comment like that should be preserved just for the poetry of it.

I just got back from seeing it. It’s defintely a wonderful concept but the execution has some problems. It has all the subtlety of the kick to the crotch, it makes absolutely NO effort to work out how an alien apartheid system would differ from the real thing and it uses that damn shaky-cam handheld video crap. Not only did I get a touch of motion sickness, but it uses that style for scenes where there couldn’t possibly be someone there filming it. Stuff that is clearly supposed to be seen by the audience as omniscient viewers is shot with the same pseudo-documentary approach, which is both stupid and gets really annoying.
It’s a decent movie even with its flaws but for all the hype, District 9 really isn’t any smarter about this subject than Alien Nation was back in the day. It’s just more labored and overly serious.

It’s funny how every single American commentator except Armond White has praised it as an “apartheid allegory” even though writer-director Neill Blonkamp, whose family was ethnically cleansed from South Africa by crime in 1997, has given countless interviews explaining that it’s a post-apartheid parable. That’s because Americans haven’t paid attention to South Africa since Nelson Mandela was elected and they all lived happily ever after.
