Worse Than a Waste of Time
My latest at The Daily Beast is captured well enough by the subhead:
Yes, the right’s complaints about Obama’s schoolhouse chat are cynical and paranoid. But there is a reasoned case for keeping him—and any president—out of the classroom.
Those who click through can learn about the role Pope John Paul II played in my Catholic school days.
Funny, then, that this “reasoned case” only materializes in the administration of the first black president.

I like organizing scattered thoughts with numbered bullet points.
1.) The intelligent criticism of the school-speech was not over the speech itself, which many thought (despite the “Dear Leader” hyperventilating from the fever swamps) would be useless and anodyne but harmless; but over the Dept.-of-Education-distributed question sheet, which asked students “what they can do to help the president,” and “to make students accountable to their goals.” This criticism resonates with yours, and maybe the comments at the Daily Beast would be less feverish if you had been clearer about that aspect of the speech (I understand that the question sheet plan was retracted, by the way).
2.) Unrelated to your main point, but
Perhaps you were being hyperbolic, but if you kids actually believed this, I can’t think much of your Catholic education! The Pope just can’t excommunicate anyone, nor is the Pope understood to be “infallible” in the way you imply. He can invoke papal infallibility when making dogmatic decisions of faith and morals, something that has only happened twice since the dogma of infallibility was defined in the nineteenth century. The pope is not “infallible” in the sense that everything he utters is the unerring word of God made for man to hear.
Maybe you knew this, but I was moved to defend the Mother Church!
3.) Let us all gawk at Chet’s flabbergasting argument for a moment, then move on.

Oh, that’s right. I forgot that there’s no more racism – Tony Snow said so, right?

I agree that we should be choosing competent leaders over moral leaders for the presidency. But, given that we did choose someone who seems to be a good role mode we might as well use him as one for the kids.

What am I supposed to be interested in? Republican hypocrisy?

I thought you might be interested in whether the reasoned case only materializes when the president happens to be black.
If you aren’t, it’s all good.
