Your parents may have been awesome, but if you ask me they still weren’t as cool as my grandparents’ family room lamp.

omg, my great uncle had a lamp (now owned by my parents) that seems to have been this gentleman’s consort — some kind of dancing girl done in the same kind of wood

I used to play cards with my grandmother. She was ‘Nana’. She and her husband “Poppop” would come out to California to escape the Jersey Winter. I didn’t realize that until I was much older. When I was young I thought they were coming out to see me.
I’d stop by her house on the way home from school and there were always Eskimo Pies in the freezer, and we’d play Go Fish. About once a month we’d go on a lunch date. Poppop taught me to fish, often from the rocks shown in this picture in this post. The holes he carved in the rocks to hold the butt end of our fishing rods are still there.
She died in August 1984, about 10 weeks after her husband died.
I saw the pack of Bicycle Playing Cards on the table and it all came rushing back.

There is nothing wrong with that picture— from the drapes to the TV Guide (I’m assuming that’s Linda Carter on the cover) to the terrific interior brick, painted white. It all comes together like a great supporting cast with the lamp taking the lead.
