I Don't Care Too Much For Money
Among the various opinions as to why Romney failed to catch fire, I think Derb’s correspondent has nailed part of it. But if envy always won the day, there’d have been no President Kennedy. My own contribution is this: McCain, while he has many enemies, also has many friends (including four who ran against him in this election: Thompson, Brownback, Giuliani and Huckabee). Romney, while he has allies, appears not to have any friends. That may be OK for a CEO. It’s untenable for a politician.
That’s not it Noah.
Romney lost because McCain positioned himself as the most-kick-butt against AQ and “win in Iraq” candidate. No one has fallen in love with McCain, but his desire to get a Win for America has pushed him over the top.
Romney’s big disadvantage is of course being Mormon. The country will not elect anytime soon: A Black, Woman, or Mormon to the White House.
McCain was dead when Iraq looked lost. When Iraq looked nearly won, McCain looked to win. Americans DO NOT LIKE LOSING. Particularly wars. Lose enough of them and you turn into France.
