Here’s what I really want to know (besides, obviously, the whole deal with that giant-foot statue in Lost): Why is More Americans Are Giving Up Golf currently the top story at the New York Times’ website? Aren’t there more exciting things going on in the world?
I can one-up that. Granted, this was a college paper, but the U. of Maryland, where I’m currently in a grad program, is alleged to be one of the “Public Ivies”.

It’s an important long-term trend involving a big aspect of American life — golf courses take up as much land as Delaware and Rhode Island combined. I wrote a 4-part series about the decline of golf back in 2003.
By the way, a reasonable argument could be made that golf course architecture was, second to movies, the most important new art form of the 20th century.
