There He Goes Again
From the always-entertaining Evans-Novak Political Report:
Exit polls also suggest that Bill Clinton successfully played his racial angle. Concentrating on Obama’s blackness, stressing that it’s fine for African-Americans to support a black candidate, Clinton drove home the idea that Obama is a “black candidate.” According to exit polls, Obama carried 86 percent of the black vote in Ohio and only 33 percent of the white vote. Clinton won big among those polled who indicated the candidate’s race was important.
Of course, ENPR also suggests Clinton’s Rhode Island win was “unexpected,” which is odd. My sense is that it was very expected.
But yes, I had a feeling we were going to see another New Hampshire. Thankfully, my confidence in John McCain has been renewed.
Reihan: I grew up in the SF Bay Area and moved to Ohio when I was 18. I was shocked by how much race mattered to Ohioans. My hometown wasn’t a colorblind paradise, but it was not nearly as divided as Ohio. So the racial polarization reported in yesterday’s Ohio exit polls did not surprise me, and I would hesitate to attribute that polarization to anything Bill Clinton did.
