I think there are other possibilities that give the ticket cred with WMDs (White Male Democrats).

-some heretofore unknown general (eaton? mcpeak? zinni?)
-Sherrod Brown
-Wes Clark
The problem is most of these guys don’t have enough message discipline. Rendell would mess something up. McPeak’s already messed up twice. Webb might screw something up too, though so far he’s had good sense. Clark was a disaster in 2004, but seems to have learned to be disciplined since then. I don’t know enough about the other generals; eaton was a big part of the Responsible Plan that is getting traction, so that may make sense.
Rendell and Clark, it should be pointed out, are Clinton allies and thus would at least help assuage party operatives who were loyal to Clinton, if not Clinton voters outside of Pennsylvania. But taking PA off the table may be valuable enough on its own.
