Pumping Iron
I’m not sure I loved Iron Man quite as much as a lot of folks (one friend who went to last night’s showing Twittered: “ Iron Man was one of the best films I’ve ever seen. Rob and John pulled it off.”), but it’s a solid (though silly) summer matinĂ©e, and I certainly enjoyed it.
One quibble — Tony Stark has always had the dual alter-ego, the upright and do-good Iron Man vs. the corrupt seeming playboy. It’s different, as is his “super-power” of being a really good engineer. But he definitely has an alter-ego. People disbelieve Stark is Iron Man because Iron Man’s do-goodism, his wholesomeness, in his actions contradict Stark’s lazy playboy image.

Just read your review at NRO. I do look forward to seeing the movie and was interested in your comments about the charm of Robert Downey Jr. in the role. I well remember the first movie I ever saw him in: Rodney Dangerfield’s “Back to School.” That movie is hilarious on so many levels but I was agog at RDJ and enchanted and mesmerized. He gave me spasms of hilarity with his expressions, quips and hairdos. The guy has sure had his problems but he is some actor. Glad to know they exploit his charm and talents well in this one.
