My position is unchanged since the first announcement of Palin as VP candidate.
I have always suspected Palin is what the Founders called a demagogue, and represents supreme cynicism as McCain’s pick for VP.
IQ-bait for the culture wars.
Sorry, but it is only human to enjoy saying I told you so.
GL, aren’t you and Douthat a bit sad about how McCain used Palin for a bounce and tossed her away?
She will never be president now.
The debate posturing was only a fresh horse for Septugenarian Guy.
There will be more.
This is basically why the youth vote is totally going to Obama.
Palin could have been a very serious contender in 4 years.
This is a greedy old guy acting in selfinterest, and sacrificing one of the brilliant young rising stars of the republican party to his egomanical desire to be president.
Illustation:
Yearning for Zion
the conservo webblogs all thought it was fine for the FLDS to raise their kids to be childbrides and uneducated breederbots because they were clean and loved Jesus.
This is the lesson of the Palin paradigm.
Spunk and grit and cute just aren’t enough.
In America, we would like to believe they are.
But real life just isn’t Legally Blonde.
Last night SNL brutally mocked Palin with cuts from her own interviews.
That is how profoundly awful she is.
Her answers are pageant answers.
In Blonde, the spunky heroine brilliantly crossexamines a witness for an “ironsides” moment, where the guilty spontaneous break out in confession.
In real life, Palin is so cravenly desperate for approval the guilty would have walked for sure.
Yah, McCain is not “Miss Congeniality”.
But Palin was Miss Congeniality in the 1984 Miss Alasaka pageant.
And sadly, she still is.
Ross Douthat….this isn’t really funnie anymore, you know.
This is a test of the Constitution and the American People.
The test question is….Can we elect a demogogue in the Age of American Idol?
Hotair is showing old pageant footage of Palin like that is a reason to vote for mccain. Dr. Reynolds says it can’t hurt. 60,000 ppl showed up for that Fla rally, and NOT for mccain, dooontcha kno.
So far, a big chunk of the electorate is in epic fail mode.
Palin as Elle Woods seems to be bad casting.
And no one, absolutely no one can say that Palin is “ready” to be president after those humiliating interviews.
Ross Douthat cant even say it.
maybe ross is waiting for this— ANCHORAGE — Soon after Sarah Palin was elected mayor of the foothill town of Wasilla, Alaska, she startled a local music teacher by insisting in casual conversation that men and dinosaurs coexisted on an Earth created 6,000 years ago — about 65 million years after scientists say most dinosaurs became extinct — the teacher said.
After conducting a college band and watching Palin deliver a commencement address to a small group of home-schooled students in June 1997, Wasilla resident Philip Munger said, he asked the young mayor about her religious beliefs.
Palin told him that “dinosaurs and humans walked the Earth at the same time,” Munger said. When he asked her about prehistoric fossils and tracks dating back millions of years, Palin said “she had seen pictures of human footprints inside the tracks,” recalled Munger, who teaches music at the University of Alaska in Anchorage and has regularly criticized Palin in recent years on his liberal political blog, called Progressive Alaska.
i dont think religion should be a descriminator….but just maybe….intelligence and education should be.
Jeepers, the denial about Palin is pathological. All of this “there’s a smart person” hidden inside the insufferable public dope we’ve been forced to endure is just so much wishful thinking. America’s love affair with this nitwit is a disgrace.
Did you see SNL’s opening last night?
Is there ANY national figure who can be mocked so easily and effectively as pure stupidity? You have to see the sketch to really appreciate how devastating it is.
Heck, some of the dialogue is almost verbatim from the Couric interview.
Palin is a dunce AND a demagogue. And a fundamentalist crackpot with an obvious mean streak.
Can we please, please get real on this?
If she is ever a serious contender, America will have become a joke.
after reading Chris Orr on “Breaking Sarah” in TNR, I have to agee with William.
Palin is simply “without”.
And I will point to Palin’s ability to believe in Young Earth Creationism.
She simply isn’t bright enough to be able to benefit from A Crash Course in Absolutely Everything.
And Douthat, if you had any stones at all you’d admit it.
Quite simply, Palin cannot have an unscripted interview with the press.
The press might ask her about Young Earth Creationism or Pentecostal witchcraft prevention.
Jindal will have the same problem if and when he runs, due to the publication of his paper describing his partiticipation in a demonic exorcism through faith healing.
It isn’t like a youthful indiscretion with marijuana.
These are genuinely crazy beliefs.
Since it is impossible to prevent the press from asking these questions, hiding from the press is the only possible counter-strategy.
This is what happens when you invite the vamphyre into the house.
Pretty soon, the vamphyres think they own the house.
And right after that, you all become vamphyres.

Sarah Palin Supports Hamas
http://jeffreygoldberg.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/09/sarah_palins_terrifying_ignora.php
“The issue here is not that Palin didn’t know the answer. There are many possible answers to this question, some of which are right and some of which are wrong. The issue here is that she didn’t know the question. Because she was apparently ignorant of the subject, she endorsed Hamas’ victory, and, in essence, called for the U.S. to “protect” Islamists who seek to use democratic elections to lever themselves into power. And, of course, Ahmadinejad came to power in a more-or-less democratic election. Palin’s answer was truly remarkable. A person who could be President of the United States has shown herself to be completely ignorant of one of the most vexing and important foreign policy questions of the day. Freshman congressmen know how to answer this question.
“Yes, Katie, it’s true that if you push for democracy, sometimes you get an outcome that you don’t want. This happened in Gaza with Hamas, and I think the Bush Administration was as surprised as everyone else. So the lesson here is that you have be careful when you try to export democracy. But I still believe that, over the long-term, democracy is the best antidote to terrorism that we have. What we have to do, though, is know when to push, and know when not to push. And every day, we have to do the hard work of advocating for press freedom, and the rule of law, and for all those things that build a civil society.”
See? Not that hard. Unless you don’t:
a) Know what happened in Gaza;
b) Know where Gaza is;
c) Know who rules Gaza today;
d) Care.
I want to wait and see Palin on Thursday night in her debate with Joe Biden; perhaps her performance in the Couric interview was abnormally bad. But I have a terrible feeling that John McCain has placed this country – and, of lesser importance, his campaign – in an untenable position.”
K-lo says the last Couric clip looks like poor Palin going to the principals office with her dad.
look at the syntax…..
Well, as Sen. McCain is suggesting here, also, never would our administration get out there and show our cards to terrorists, in this case, to enemies and let them know what the game plan was, not when that could ultimately adversely affect a plan to keep America secure.
“never would”? that is pageant speak…where you fill in words while madly scrambling for an answer.
Poor Palin’s quotes are chock full of that.
Can she do better?
guess we will see thursday.
palin go home.

Beneath you, Noah. You too, Matoko. You’re obsession with Ross’s “obsession” with Palin is worse than his obsession.
I guess it’s not just a left-wing staple to laugh at those less polished, intelligent, etc. and then pretend to care about them.
“But then they shouldn’t govern us.”
Fine. But the inexperienced-but-polished guy on the other ticket is the headliner.
And if I’ve misinterpreted anything about your tone in the past weeks, it’s because I’m at work, earning tax dollars to bail out idiot bankers.
