The Arcadian Friends
Tim Richardson’s account of the early history of English landscape gardening and its often surprising political contexts, The Arcadian Friends, is a fascinating social history that seems, alas, to have gotten very little attention. I try to do my part for an excellent book here.
I had come across recently comments as to how English gardens in the first half of the 18th century prepared the way for Romanticism in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Fascinating argument. But dammit I forget the name of the author/philosopher…! Anyway, fascinating book review – whets the appetite for a fuller look
