The New Conan
He’s better than Leno, but that’s hardly shocking. Mostly, though, I was less than impressed by his mildly amusing but muted debut. He’s a fun presence, as always, and that awesomely arced tuft of hair never fails to impress, but I think what always drew me to Conan was the inspired, brainy weirdness that was largely hidden on his debut, and will almost certainly be tamped down as his new show goes forward.
Conan’s a few IQ points too smart to be as broadly popular as Leno was. Letterman has the same problem plus you can see the viciousness peeking through.

That’s probably right, although Leno’s audience always skewed older, and that could help Conan in the long run. As the audience for late night talk shifts more and more toward generations more comfortable with intellectualized irony rather than variations on jokey, Borscht Belt standup, Conan might be able to generate a sizable following.

I was re-watching an interview Conan did with Obama in ’06 when he was in Chicago. Conan humor regarding his hair: “this is a high-density polymer that NASA invented”. I can’t see Leno ad-libbing that..

I think the best part about having Conan hosting the Tonight Show is the return of Andy Richter as his announcer. I love them together.

Last night they did “In the Year 3000”, an update on a long-running Conan bit. It was pure gold.

Last night’s monologue was awesome, as well. I think he’ll be really good. Let him make the transition. It will be interesting to watch.
