Jelly Sans Peanut Butter
Though I’ve the utmost respect for Kevin Drum, a Mother Jones blogger who is always worth reading, I must say that his regular cat blogging is eating up bandwidth and garnering attention better lavished on jellyfish.
Behold their majesty!
Conor, if you think with this kind of post you’re disguising your rabid right-wing attacks on the Obama administration, as well as your utter betrayal of all sound conservative principles, you have another think coming!

Regardless of his political views, we have to admit that Drum is a catsucker.

The proper nomenclature is now “jellies,” apparently because they are not fish. (Likewise: “sea stars.”) I blame the liberal PC media.

I was stung by a jellyfish once, long ago, when visiting relatives in Florida. It was extremely unpleasant. The girl I was swimming with (we were ten) started screaming – she was out a bit deeper than me. I thought for sure she was being attacked by a shark. Then I felt the jellyfish, like electric sand….and we were both screaming then, swimming and running back to shore.
But yeah, they’re really beautiful when they’re not stinging you.

Nice photo. Who took it?
Someone at my workplace once found some freshwater jellyfish in a body of water nearby. It was my first time seeing them even though I’ve spent many hours of my life looking at freshwater invertebrates. I tried to keep them alive in an aquarium, but failed, as does almost everyone who tries. They were wonderful to watch while they lived. If I get some again I’ll try to put them on YouTube.
