i don’t know if i understood you correctly, but at some point you mentioned france, and analogized it to other european nations and israel, vs. the USA. basically not all the citizens of most nations (e.g., arab israelis) are really considered members of that nation. in the USA there’s a pretty good overlap because of our unique history. but i think france’s case is more complicated than that of israel or most european nations. france is a nation of european and non-european immigrants, and has been since the first waves of poles showed up in the 19th century. i’m not convinced that france is up to american standards. i.e., can a colored person be as fundamentally french as they can be american? i doubt it. but i don’t think france is extreme as germany, or frankly, even england.
