Reason TV on School Nurses
Another example of government employee unions affecting legislation in a way that is detrimental to the public though better for the financial interests of organizers or union members.
The legislators who went along with this ought to be ashamed of themselves.
You made the argument against public sector unions much better than I have. :)
This is incredibly, incredibly distressing.
How do these people sleep at night? Seriously. How?

I don’t think this helps any argument against public sector unions. The fact that the drug needs to be administered rectally is a good reason why school staff shouldn’t be administering the drug.
A better law would be to require that ambulances and first-responders carry the drug at all times.

The better law would be to require that schools have nurses (or at least someone trained as an EMT?) on site when children are present.
As Dave noted, the route of administration makes this drug far, far different than a situation involving an epi-pen or inhaler. Even an unfounded allegation of impropriety when administering the drug could ruin a career.

What the hell has happened around here? What a falling off.
You will never be an employee of a job that requires someone to vigorously defend your interests, Conor, and that is a privilege that you and all other heroic union-haters enjoy. What a bold, brave stance, to constantly attack the only vehicles some people have to improve the material conditions of their lives. What a show of strength, the constant union-bashing around here. What bravery, from the privileged white libertarians at Reason who have absolutely no skin in the game. What a performance. What a performance.

“What the hell has happened around here? What a falling off.”
Bloggers often get intellectually exhausted I think. A similar event seems to have happened at various other locales as well. There is still some good stuff on this site.
Conservatism needs a re-boot in the worst way. People complain so much about the social conservatives, but it’s in economics where the problems are the most pronounced. Tax cuts and union busting – thirty years later and it’s the same damn thing.

I’ll admit that I don’t take reason video’s at face value. But if the medical folks at the front lines, nurses, are saying that it needs a professional to administer the drug correctly then it might be more important to do so then any anti-union sentiment can overcome.
This video does not also deal with what particular issues the committee was dealing with. Most Reason videos pretend that the political process is easy and this is purely a matter of unions versus people who want to protect kids. I’m not so easily convinced.

Connor, I usually enjoy your thoughtful posts but this isn’t one of them. If you had a choice between an RN or an office secretary medically evaluating and administering the medication to your child you would choose the office secretary? Really? If you really care about the safety of children then you would want a Registered Nurse available to attend to the medical needs of children. I want a pofessional who knows how to assess a patient. You know, take vital signs, assess neuro, CP, CV, GI, GU, able to understand medical language and pts medical history and make the appropriate interventions. Lastly, have you even considered the medical liability for the secretary (or whomever) should something, God forbid, go wrong? Registered Nurses are required to carry liability insurance. Sometimes ya gotta put down that antiunion bottle. In this case, you took one too many swiggs. :)
