I Shot the Sheriff, But I Didn't Pop the Ecstasy

Optical engineer David Samuels, who runs an entertaining blog called A Foolish Consistency, has accused me of using MDMA.

Hmmm, let’s see…Reihan is at a world-famous indie music festival in a famously libertine college town, writing late night glowing encomiums to little-known bands, blathering endlessly about how cute all the members are, being unusally emotive, even for Reihan, and claiming dehydration, a well-known side-effect of certain mood-altering substances?

I plead innocent. That said, I do strongly believe that MDMA has great therapeutic potential, and that banning its use for medical purposes was a serious mistake. That aside, Samuels has inspired to write a reply in song form. I intend to record a 30-track CD under the name “Reihan and the Reihans,” inspired by one-man bands like Casiotone for the Painfully Alone and former one-man bands like Say Hi and Aqueduct). First I need to acquire a Casio keyboard, or some other means of making sounds. I am completely serious about this, but it might take me a little while.

A few tracks I’ve been thinking about: “MDMA — Hurray!,” “Man: The Mushy Middle Between Monkey and Machine,” “Pre-K Naptime,” etc.
